TURKEY – A COUNTRY ON ITS WAY INTO THE EU
(Бургаски свободен университет, 2015) Olaf Christian von Roeder
This article presents an analysis of Turkey and its ambition to become a full member of the European Union including its consequences for the EU and its Member States. The analysis starts with the historical background of Turkey and its long journey to the West. The second chapter represents the main part of this work, covering the topics "Turkey at Present" and “EU-Resentments”. The analysis of these issues is necessary for a better understanding of Turkish politics today - especially in the light of the country 's application to become a full member of the EU. The article concludes with practical recommendations for both parties. As a result it can be stated that many Turks (still) want to see their country as a member of the European Union, but an even larger majority believes that the EU will never embrace Turkey. This perception can only be changed if Europe shows more sensitivity for Turkey. The EU in turn should not raise the impression that there are double standards for Turkey and other candidates. Anyhow, Turkey must also do its share. Turkish leaders need to tell their public that the EU will need time for an expansion particularly due to the community`s financial and political challenges. The overall objective of this work is to provide an "added value" approach in order to avoid errors in the planning and implementation of a full membership for Turkey. The issue is therefore relevant, and one of the greatest challenges facing the European Union.
