Item DO COMPANIES HAVE TO BE SELFISH TO BE COMPETITIVE IN THE MARKET? BUSINESS STRATEGY ON A VALUES-BASED APPROACH IN THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY: THE GERMAN MITTELSTAND(Бургаски Свободен Университет, 2017) Wehner, EminThe world has been struggling with an economic crisis since 2007 in general. Next to the economic crisis based on diminishing growth and employment, the world economy has also been facing unprecedented environmental and social problems. The current state of the world economy is directly connected to the orthodox Neoclassical Economic Theory which has been claiming that businesses are only profit making and all economic agents including company owners and managers must be acting only for their very own wealth maximisation. This is very well reflected in ‘the shareholders’ wealth maximisation’ approach of the Anglo-American stock-market-based economic system. Therefore, the Neoclassical Model provides its legitimacy to such actions caused environmental and social problems such as global warming and huge income discrepancies. However, recently new concepts such as ‘circular economy’ have also been introduced and widely accepted by sensible companies and governments. In addition, new discussions have also gained a momentum in the public scene regarding ‘sustainability of business’. In this paper a simple conceptual framework is introduced to integrate strategic management, ethics or moral values with business sustainability in the new circular economy with a special focus on the German SMEs sector (Mittelstand) to reflect the practical examples of sustainable and ethical approaches to business. This is important and interesting since the German economy has been doing the best among other European countries in the current economic crisis. This report aims to reveal the real implementation of corporate and socially engaged companies. It refers to the decoupling of socioeconomic development through sea-related sectors and activities from environmental degradation. The blue economy has diverse components, including established traditional maritime industries such as fisheries, tourism, and maritime transport, but also new and emerging activities, such as offshore renewable energy, aquaculture, seabed extractive activities, and marine biotechnology and bioprospecting. A number of services provided by ocean ecosystems, and for which markets do not exist, also contribute significantly to economic and other human activity such as carbon sequestration, coastal protection, waste disposal and the existence of biodiversity.Item GLOBAL SEAFOOD INDUSTRY SUSTAINABILITY(Бургаски свободен университет, 2018) Sabotinova, DianaEnsuring ocean sustainability has become a global challenge, as unsustainable practices threaten marine biodiversity, fish stocks, food security and livelihoods. The objective of the paper is to identify the key challenges facing the world’s oceans and seafood industry as well as the policy options and reform opportunities for the global trade system to support a transition towards sustainable seafood industry and healthier oceans. For this purpose, a survey of the content of university websites offering undergraduate and/or graduate programs in accounting is conducted. The survey encompasses also information from the Bulgarian University Ranking System. The study reveals that sustainability education is hardly offered by universities, training future accountants. Only a limited number of universities offer sustainability courses as stand-alone courses. The research is limited by the information available on the websites of the universities. In some cases, there is no information on the courses provided in a given bachelor and/or master programme. The study could not ascertain whether individual topics related to sustainability are included as single topics in some accounting and non-accounting courses due to unpublished information on the content of the courses or at least the more substantive topics covered. This study may constitute a valuable starting point for future research on the inclusion of sustainability in higher education.Item PRACTICAL EXAMPLE OF THE APPLICATION OF LEAN 6 SIGMA METHODOLOGY IN DATA SCIENCE(Бургаски свободен университет, 2023) Nikola Iliychev IlievThe paper looks at the application of Lean Six Sigma Methodology in an existing Data Science Example of Data Mining, Data Processing and Report Generation.Item SUSTAINABLE LEADERSHIP IN PRACTICE OF SPANISH AND POLISH LEADERS. A COMPARATIVE STUDY(Бургаски свободен университет, 2023) Ewa Wójcik; Elena BulmerThe Anthropocene, the human age developing along industrialization has affected the environment to an unprecedented extent. For contemporary businesses to achieve a competitive edge and attract investors, it is necessary not only to be financially efficient but also to address environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) goals. The market valuation is increasingly based on other than tangible assets and market participants expect profit will be generated with ethical conduct, the value created for all stakeholders, and meeting social goals to achieve common well-being and a better future. It is well aligned with CSR principles and sustainable development goals, the frameworks of XXI century company operation. In this environment, leadership is a challenge to be inclusive of all stakeholders often with conflicting views. Moreover, globalization demands an expansion of organizational borders and the embracing of a variety of cultures. Technological advancements and innovations demand constant adaptation, improving qualifications of the staff that will need support, assistance, and mentoring. Sustainable leadership, therefore, requires a wide range of new skills and a multidimensional approach. The paper is a comparative study based on research carried out among Spanish and Polish leaders in 2022-2023. Its results provide insight into how a role of a leader is perceived in the two countries EU members and examine the main differences between their views and activities.
