Abstract
The paper examines the main approaches and methods for selection, training and development of managers, which are based on the competency model. The methodology, including competency-oriented job (work) analysis is described. The methods of collecting data for this analysis include many different techniques - psychological methods such as interview, observation and empirical studies with questionnaires; data for the analysis of activity can be collected as well from written documents and materials, archival records, diaries of usual (routine) processes; also the Critical Incident Technique is used, functional job analysis (FJA), standardized job analysis questionnaires (PAQ, JCI) and structural job analysis. A generalized framework of managerial competencies is presented, including 25 core competencies. From this framework, the specific requirements for a given management position can be derived and formulated. The approach to assessing and selecting managers through Assessment and Career Development Centers is described in more detail. The advantages and opportunities of these centers to develop managers are outlined.
