Abstract
The object of the study is the figurative semantics of the lexeme chalga in two text types: thematic (headlines texts) and associative and figurative expressions (semantic punch lines). The research proves that phenomenon (the representative) constructed in the public space is not of a private nature. It has common cultural meaning and puts a mark in a specific way on the culture of the Transition period. Chalga lies in the thalweg (mainstream) of a cultural process which is characterized by the tendency towards commercialism, hedonism, mediatization, simplification (lowering) and immixing of styles.
