Abstract
The judges of the UN International Court of Justice are elected by two bodies of the United Nations – the Security Council and the General Assembly. The Member States follow two categories of criteria for election: objective and subjective. The objective criteria are two: just geographical distribution of judges’ seats in the Court and representation of the principal legal systems of the world by the judges in the Court. The subjective criteria are two as well: high moral character of the judge and his professional qualities as lawyer, and more particularly as international law specialist.
